Systems not yet breached, but awareness heightened after hack of former President Trump’s campaign.
An official representing Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign said this week that they were recently “targeted by a foreign actor influence operation.” Campaign officials were informed of this development by the FBI, who investigated the campaign’s cybersecurity after they were informed that former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign was hacked last week.
“We have robust cybersecurity measures in place, and are not aware of any security breaches of our systems resulting from those efforts,” the Harris campaign official said, adding that organizers remain in communication with authorities to avoid future hacks.
In 2021, the FBI confirmed that Russia had enacted multiple online schemes to sway public opinion ahead of the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. The FBI also warned Congressional leaders earlier this year that China and Iran will likely join Russia in enacting similar strategies ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
