The Department of Justice reported this week that a former employee of the U.S. Army pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to sell military secrets to China. Korbein Schultz was an intelligence analyst with top-secret access and accepted $42,000 from the Chinese government in exchange for military lessons the U.S. learned from the Russia-Ukraine war. Schultz sent dozens of restricted military documents to China, though all were unclassified.
Brigadier General Rhett Cox, Commanding General of the Army Counterintelligence Command, said, “Let this case serve as a warning: if any member of the Army, past or present, is asked for classified or sensitive information, they should report it to the appropriate authorities within 24 hours or be held fully accountable for their inaction.”
FBI Executive Assistant Director Robert Wells stated, “Governments like China are aggressively targeting our military personnel and national security information and we will do everything in our power to ensure that information is safeguarded from hostile foreign governments.”
