The group seeks to avoid an omnibus to fund the federal government.
The House Freedom Caucus announced before the August recess that they will pursue a continuing resolution to avoid an omnibus for the 2025 federal budget before the September 30 deadline.
The Freedom Caucus members are advocating for a short-term continuing resolution, in order to pass the larger spending bill after the 2024 election. The members stated doing so would ensure that the current majority party does not pass “a ‘lame duck’ omnibus in December.”
When asked about the possibility, House Speaker Mike Johnson said he was “thinking about all those alternatives.” He said, “We’re having some very thoughtful discussion about the pros and cons of the various strategies on it, and that decision is not yet determined, but it will be very soon.”
Speaker Johnson added that he didn’t think it would “behoove the country” to run into another government shutdown.
