Destinations

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?        1 Corinthians 6:9

Expedition Unknown, the popular television series that premiered in 2015, features archaeologist and adventurer Josh Gates as he investigates legends and mysteries, and often engages in treasure searches. He is frequently directed from one destination to another as he pursues answers, and his journeys inevitably take him on some wild escapades.

Each person has his or her own journey through life. For some, their expeditions take them into uncharted territories, either due to their own or others’ choices. Others have an easier road with rather minor bumps and potholes along the way. The majority are somewhere in the middle, trying to do the best they can with what they know and what they have. Those who are charting their own destinations have one thing in common: a life separate from God. That is, until the Words of the Savior ring true to them: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Jesus explained to Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

The danger, even among people whose lives have been transformed by faith in Jesus, is the tendency to continue sinning. The believer has great liberty in Christ, but it is not to be considered carte blanche to live life your way. Theologian William Barclay says, “The proof of Christianity lay in its power.” Submit yourself daily to Christ within you, living by His power (2 Corinthians 13:4). Then sing the words written by Townsend and Getty, “In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength my song. … No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me. From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand. Til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.”

Today’s Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:9

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.
