Officials seek to deter threatened Iranian attack during Gaza ceasefire negotiations.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered a U.S. guided missile submarine to the Middle East this week in an attempt to deter attacks on Israel by Iran, Hezbollah, or other Iranian proxies. Secretary Austin also ordered the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln to travel to the area from the Asian Pacific region, taking over for the USS Theodore Roosevelt currently stationed there.
Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder said that the U.S. defense secretary spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over the weekend, during which he “reiterated the United States’ commitment to take every possible step to defend Israel.”
President Joe Biden also stated that Israel is continuing to engage in negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release agreement with Hamas.
