Technology Modernization Fund Invests in Nuclear Response and AI Safety

Commerce and energy departments will put funding to use for operations and an NIST initiative.

The Departments of Energy and Commerce are receiving a combined $13.8 million from the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) to enhance nuclear emergency response capabilities and establish safety standards for artificial intelligence (AI).

The Energy Department will use $3.8 million to upgrade its radiological response data portal, which supports the Nuclear Emergency Support Team’s operations. The Commerce Department will allocate $10 million to develop its AI Safety Institute, an initiative under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) designed to assess AI risks and create mitigation guidelines.

“In order to remain competitive, while keeping Americans safe, funding the AI Safety Institute is critical,” stated Representative Haley Stevens of Michigan. “While I’m glad the AI Safety institute received a one-time grant from the Technology Modernization Fund, truly investing in AI safety requires consistent and sufficient appropriations.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Representative Stevens as she advocates for AI safety and competition.
  • For Chair Clare Martorana and members as they serve on the TMF board and approve modernization projects.
  • For discernment for Secretaries Granholm and Raimondo as they head their respective departments.
