Pentagon Announces U.S. Complete Withdrawal from Niger

The departure from the West African nation was accomplished a month ahead of schedule.

U.S. forces have completed their total withdrawal from Niger a month ahead of schedule, fulfilling the terms of a mutual agreement reached between U.S. and Niger leadership.

“Over the past decade, U.S. troops have trained Niger’s forces and supported partner-led counterterrorism missions against Islamic State and al Qaeda in the region,” the Pentagon said in a joint statement with Niger’s military agency. “The U.S. Department of Defense and the Nigerien Ministry of National Defense recognize the sacrifices made by both nations’ forces.”

Relations between the U.S. and the West African nation began deteriorating after a military coup overtook Niger leadership in 2023. When U.S. leadership expressed concern about the new regime’s interest in strengthening Russian relations earlier this year, Niger leadership demanded that the Pentagon withdraw the 1,000 U.S. troops stationed within the country.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For leaders in the Pentagon as they cooperate with foreign governments and militaries on U.S. deployments to their nations.
  • For Secretary Austin to be led by the Lord as he heads the Defense Department.
