Patricia Lynn Murray (nee Johns) was born in October 1950 in Bothell, Washington. She earned a B.A. degree in physical education from Washington State University and was a school teacher for several years.

She entered the political arena as a lobbyist for environmental and educational issues. She served four years as a member of the Washington Senate and has been a member of the United States Senate since January 1993. She also currently serves as president pro tempore of the Senate.

She is married to Rob and has two grown children. She is a Catholic.

Senator Patty Murray of Washington, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, recently spoke about the committee’s efforts to approve 12 appropriation bills.

“Over the last few weeks, we have made serious progress writing strong, bipartisan funding bills—passing seven so far out of Committee with overwhelming bipartisan support,” Senator Murray stated.

She added, “I look forward to keeping the momentum up on Thursday when we consider another four bills, and we will continue working toward a bipartisan agreement on the Homeland Security bill.”

The deadline for congressional appropriations for fiscal year 2025 is the end of September.
