Interior secretary responds to the designation
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s Historic Moravian District to its World Heritage List, becoming the 26th location in the U.S. to be granted the designation. The historic planned community, constructed in 1741, is the first U.S. World Heritage Site designated as a transnational location, along with two other Moravian historic sites in Ireland and Denmark.
Secretary Deb Haaland directed the Department of the Interior (DOI) to file for this designation in 2022, supported by the National Park Service.
“The United States is deeply honored to be included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List with the listing of the Historic Moravian Bethlehem District where visitors from around the world are able to learn about the rich history of Moravian settlements, their cultural tradition and spiritual ideals,” said Secretary Haaland. “This designation is a recognition of the incredible work of the National Park Service and its local partners to preserve an important part of American – and world – history.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for Secretary Haaland as she heads the Interior Department.
- For U.S. interior officials as they advocate for U.S. districts as historic sites.
- For Director Sams to receive God’s guidance as he oversees the National Park Service.
