Interior Secretary Establishes Blackwell School as Newest National Park

The Interior secretary announces the designation to preserve a historic site of Mexican segregation.

The Department of the Interior designated the Blackwell School as the newest National Historic Site. The Blackwell School was constructed for Mexican and Mexican American elementary students living in Texas in 1909, where segregation between white and Hispanic citizens was widespread between 1889 and 1965.

“This site is a powerful reminder of our nation’s diverse and often complex journey toward equality and justice,” said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. “By honoring the legacy of Blackwell School, we recognize the resilience and contributions of the Latino community in our shared history.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Deb Haaland as she oversees the work of the Interior Department.
  • That Director Chuck Sams would be led by God as he heads the National Park Service.
  • For Interior officials as the seek to preserve the nation’s history.
