Marisa Lago
Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade
Marisa Louise Lago was born in December 1955 in Brooklyn, New York. She earned an undergraduate degree from Cooper Union, studied at Brown University for a semester, and received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. She clerked for a U.S. circuit judge in New Hampshire for a year.
She was the director and chief economic development officer for the Boston Redevelopment Authority, then became president and CEO of the Empire State Development Corporation.
President Obama nominated Lago as assistant secretary of the treasury for international markets and development. The Senate confirmed her to the position in 2010. She later served as U.S. director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. She returned to New York and served as the director of the Department of City Planning and chaired the City Planning Commission.
President Joe Biden nominated Lago as under secretary of commerce for international trade. She was confirmed by the Senate and sworn into office in December 2021.

Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago accompanied Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to the Fifth Business Forum and Ministerial of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (P-TECC) in Bucharest, Romania, this week. The purpose of the ministerial was to “advance bilateral and transatlantic cooperation on energy security, the clean energy transition, and critical and emerging technologies.“
The Commerce Department stated that the under secretary would “participate in bilateral meetings, panel discussions at P-TECC, and other outreach events with key U.S. industry stakeholders to emphasize the Department of Commerce’s commitment to strengthening Europe’s energy security and independence, while also promoting the leading role that the U.S. private sector plays in developing and deploying innovative climate solutions and clean technologies to combat global climate change.“
While there, Under Secretary Lago emphasized the Commerce Department’s “commitment to expanding two-way trade with Romania and U.S. support for Romania’s energy objectives, including ongoing collaboration on small modular reactors.“
