Theodore Roosevelt Replaces Eisenhower in Middle East Operations

The previous strike group was relieved of its extended 9-month deployment in the Red Sea region.

The aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt has taken over operations in the Middle East, replacing the Dwight D. Eisenhower after its extended deployment to counter Houthi rebels based in Yemen. The Theodore Roosevelt and its carrier strike group recently arrived in the U.S. 5th Fleet area to deter aggression, promote stability, and ensure the free flow of commerce in the region, as stated by U.S. Central Command.

The Harry S. Truman was initially expected to replace the Eisenhower, but it remains in the certification phase. The Eisenhower strike force, which deployed in October, was the first carrier in the area since the end of the War in Afghanistan in 2021. The Eisenhower defended against Iran-backed Houthi drones and missiles. For their efforts, the crew received the Combat Action Ribbon, a rare honor for sailors since the 1991 Gulf War.

“When called upon, the force brought the fight to the Houthis in their front yard, linking airpower and dynamic and self-defense strikes. These acts reduced the risk to shipping and also reinforced our nation’s commitment to maritime security,” said Vice Admiral George Wikoff, Commander of the U.S. Fifth Fleet.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Vice Admiral Wikoff to be prudent as he commands the U.S. Fifth Fleet.
  • For General Kurilla as he commands the U.S. Central Command.
  • For Secretary Austin to be discerning as he heads the Defense Department.
