Lina Khan

Lina M. Khan was born in March 1989 in London, England. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was 11 years old. She earned an undergraduate degree from Williams College and received a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. She worked at the New America Foundation during her years as a student.
Khan served as legal director for the Open Markets Institute, a spin-off from New America. She joined Columbia Law School as an academic fellow and later joined the school’s faculty as an Associate Professor of Law.
Khan worked as a Legal Fellow at the Federal Trade Commission, then served as counsel to the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law.
She was nominated by President Joe Biden to be a Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission. Her nomination was confirmed by the Senate and she assumed office in June 2021. President Biden then appointed her chair of the FTC.
Khan is married to Shah Ali and has one child.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken action against operators of an anonymous messaging app for violating laws and marketing the service to those under 18 years of age. NGL Labs will have to pay $5 million and be prohibited from offering the “NGL: ask me anything” to minors.
FTC Chair Lina Khan stated, “NGL marketed its app to kids and teens despite knowing that it was exposing them to cyberbullying and harassment.” The company used fake, computer-generated messages that misled users into believing that they were being contacted by friends or other connections on social media.
Chair Khan continued, “In light of NGL’s reckless disregard for kids’ safety, the FTC’s order would ban NGL from marketing or offering its app to those under 18. We will keep cracking down on businesses that unlawfully exploit kids for profit.”
In addition to targeting children and teens, the company failed to disclose weekly fees it charged users for its “NGL Pro” service.
