The agency will seek input on the proposal to have phones unlocked 60 days after purchase.
The Federal Communications Commission has begun the rule-making process that would mandate mobile providers to unlock cell phones 60 days after activation. Mobile carriers generally place a proprietary lock on phones, stopping consumers from using devices on other providers’ networks until either the contract has been fulfilled or the phone has been paid off.
FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel stated, “When you buy a phone, you should have the freedom to decide when to change service to the carrier you want and not have the device you own stuck by practices that prevent you from making that choice. That is why we are proposing clear, nationwide mobile phone unlocking rules.”
