FEMA and HHS Encourages Extreme Heat Protection Plans

Their statement reads that increasingly hot summers kill more people than any other weather events.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a joint statement with FEMA that Americans should establish extreme heat plans to protect themselves from heat-related dangers. According to the CDC, extreme heat is the most deadly weather-related hazard in the United States, with around 1,200 people dying from heat stroke or heat exhaustion every year.

Fortunately, preventing heat illnesses is easy as long as diligence is maintained. The HHS recommends locating multiple places to get cool when outside, drinking plenty of water, and learning to identify the major symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

“2023 was our hottest year on record. That may be the coolest year we see moving forward as temperatures continue to rise,” said HHS Assistant Secretary for Health ADM Rachel Levine. “The good news is that climate solutions are health solutions – they can confer immediate benefits to health and health equity. Together, we can beat the heat.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For ADM Levine as she leads the charge for this public service announcement.
  • That FEMA is granted the resources necessary to support Americans in emergencies.
  • For the president’s administration as its agencies work together to address the needs of the American people during extreme weather events.
