USDA Issues Fourth of July Food Safety Recommendations

Reminder includes thawing, marination, and cooking temperature safety guidelines.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a meat safety reminder as families around the country head outside to grill together for the Fourth of July. The department recommended that resident grill masters thaw meat completely before cooking, keep their marinating meats in the refrigerator to reduce bacteria growth, and grill their meats to safe internal temperatures.

“Fourth of July is a great time to use the grill and smoker to cook delicious meats and poultry,” said Under Secretary for Food Safety Emilio Esteban. “Whichever method you use, reduce your risk of foodborne illness by using a food thermometer to measure the safe minimum internal temperature, and reduce cross-contamination by using separate utensils for raw and cooked meat and poultry.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Under Secretary Esteban to seek God’s wisdom as he oversees the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
  • For Secretary Vilsack and other USDA officials as they assess the U.S. food supply and provide programs to American food producers.
