Interior Department Awards Funding to Close Orphaned Wells

The latest round of funding was distributed to Alaska, Arizona, New York, and Ohio.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) distributed an additional $126.7 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to close abandoned oil and gas wells in Alaska, Arizona, Indiana, New York, and Ohio. These states were selected after the department identified 600 more wells negatively affecting rural communities, with excess funds allocated to plug undocumented wells that may be identified in plugging efforts.

“Toxic orphaned oil and gas wells have plagued American communities for generations,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “Millions of Americans live within a mile of an orphaned oil and gas well. With this historic funding, we are empowering the states of Alaska, Arizona, Indiana, New York and Ohio to begin to turn the tide on these environmental hazards that are harming our communities, lands, waters and air.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Haaland to be prudent as she heads the Interior Department’s support of capping orphaned wells.
  • For Interior Department officials to seek God’s guidance as they steward public lands.
