DHS Secretary Extends Haitian Temporary Protected Status

Deteriorating conditions in Haiti prompt 18-month extension for migrants.

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has announced that the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) provided to Haitian nationals living in the U.S. has been extended to February 3, 2026. This 18-month extension allows around 309,000 Haitian citizens to legally live in America. Haiti continues to be impacted by intense gang violence, a deposed government, a lack of food and water, and extreme flooding and mudslides.

“We are providing this humanitarian relief to Haitians already present in the United States given the conditions that existed in their home country as of June 3, 2024,” said Secretary Mayorkas. “In doing so, we are realizing the core objective of the TPS law and our obligation to fulfill it.”

The extension applies to Haitian nationals who were in the United States as of June 3, 2024. DHS states that those arriving after that date will face removal back to Haiti.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Mayorkas to be discerning as he assesses the situations of the home countries of illegal migrants in the U.S.
  • For DHS and border security officials as they endeavor to vet the massive number of migrants entering the nation.
