FMCSA Launches Nationwide Initiative to Prevent Moving Scams

The new program addresses fraudulent movers and brokers and supports consumer education.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has launched Operation Protect Your Move, a nationwide initiative to address fraudulent interstate household goods (HHG) movers and brokers. The agency seeks to address complaints regarding compliance with federal safety and consumer protection regulations. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted the importance of protecting consumers from scams where moving companies hold possessions hostage.

“We take our consumer protection role seriously and aim to help educate and protect those who may be moving their household goods from one state to another,” said FMCSA Acting Deputy Administrator Sue Lawless. “We are committed to this work, and we are putting forth even more resources to make a greater impact, including increasing the number of HHG investigators on staff and establishing additional partnerships with state attorneys general offices.”

The FMCSA has also launched the Protect Your Move education campaign to raise awareness of moving scams ahead of the busy summer season. Consumers are encouraged to access FMCSA’s free online resources.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Acting Deputy Administrator Lawless to be prudent as she oversees the FMCSA.
  • For wisdom for Secretary Buttigieg as he heads the effort to address consumer protection compliance from moving companies.
