Remember and Reflect

  Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!        1 Chronicles 16:24

On April 23, researcher George Barna released the 2024 American Worldview Inventory. In his research, he found that nearly two-thirds of Americans were “dissatisfied with the way things are going in our country today.” His study further revealed that 96 percent of Americans do not hold a biblical worldview, and, astonishingly, neither do 94 percent of self-identified Christians. Rather, a good many Americans hold unbiblical beliefs on issues of good and evil, the basic nature of humankind, reliance on “personal truths,” and the spiritual essence of objects, places, creatures, animals, plants, rocks, and rivers (animism).

In 1962, the Supreme Court banned public prayer in elementary, middle, and high schools. In the last decade, the nation’s highest court has had to consider the constitutionality of “In God We Trust” as the national motto on American currency, and the words “Under God” in the pledge of allegiance (both were ruled constitutional). Just last year, a Utah public school district removed the Bible from elementary and middle schools for containing “vulgarity and violence,” as unsuitable for children. In today’s lexicon, words like “Christian nationalism,” “Judeo-Christian nation,” “evangelical,” and “fundamental” have become pejorative. The majority of the fallen among America’s military who are honored today held the belief that they were fighting for “God, country, and liberty.” Now, as one Vietnam-era Marine commander, holder of two Purple Hearts and many commendations, says, “We have no idea what we’re fighting for anymore.”

Today’s verse is part of the worship sung at a ceremony when the Ark of the Covenant was returned to Jerusalem and placed in a tent built for it by King David. The people of Israel had endured many things, including wars. However, on that day, they were called to remember, reflect, and give thanks and glory to the Lord. Today, as you honor those who sacrificed their lives in military duty, reflect on all that God has done to bless America, and give Him thanks. Then, pray that officials in government would hear the voice of God calling them to repentance.

16 And they brought in the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. 2 And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord 3 and distributed to all Israel, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins.

23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth!
    Tell of his salvation from day to day.
24 Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous works among all the peoples!
25 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and he is to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and joy are in his place.

28 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering and come before him!
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;
30     tremble before him, all the earth;
    yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
