The crew is being examined regarding any onboard system problems on the cargo ship before the crash.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) opened a criminal investigation this week into crew members of the cargo ship that disastrously crashed into a key Baltimore bridge, examining whether or not the crew knew of compromised ship systems before it crashed.
On March 26, the cargo ship Dali lost power as it sailed, setting it on a crash course with a support of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The crew managed to alert law enforcement to clear traffic before the collision, but eight construction workers were killed in the disaster.
FBI investigators recovered the ship’s data recorder and are working on interviewing pertinent crew members. The Dali was previously involved in a similar but smaller incident in 2016, when it hit a quay as it exited a container terminal in Antwerp, Belgium. In June 2023, an inspection of the vessel conducted in San Antonio, Chile, found issues with the ship’s propulsion and auxiliary machinery.
