At the Pentagon, the leaders discussed the war against Hamas in Gaza.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant at the Pentagon this week, where the two leaders discussed what direction to take Israel’s war in Gaza. In the conversation, which took place behind closed doors, Secretary Austin stated that the U.S. military remains dedicated to supporting Israel against Hamas, the militant government in control of Gaza, but also called the protection of Gaza’s 1.5 million civilians. “both a moral necessity and a strategic imperative.” They discussed the need to balance military action and civilian care.
“We believe that the concepts that we are sharing and the additional ideas we’re developing based on those concepts have the potential to achieve the dual objectives of protecting the civilians who are currently in Rafah and defeating the Hamas battalions that are in Rafah,” a Pentagon official said, referencing an area of Gaza where civilians have been directed to remain.
