Judge Trina Thompson

Trina Lynn Thompson was born in 1961 in Oakland, California. She earned an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and her Juris Doctor from the UC Berkeley School of Law.
Thompson served as a public defender in Alameda County before establishing her own office as a criminal defense attorney. She was elected as a judge on the Alameda County Superior Court.
She was appointed by President Obama to serve on the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 2011. She became a University of California, Berkeley, lecturer and later an adjunct professor at the law school.
Thompson was nominated by President Biden to serve on the Northern California U.S. District Court in 2021. The nomination expired and was resubmitted in January 2022. The Senate confirmed her in May, and she received her commission in August of 2022.

District Court Judge Trina Thompson dismissed a lawsuit from Yelp against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Yelp had sought to stop a suit brought by the state of Texas against the business review site for violating the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. The company claimed infringement upon its right to free speech.
Attorney General Paxton filed suit against Yelp, alleging that the disclaimers the review site added to crisis pregnancy centers were misleading and disparaging. He said, “Yelp cannot mislead and deceive the public simply because the company disagrees with our state’s laws.”
Judge Thompson stated that Yelp did not provide “enough concrete evidence“ to prove the motivations of the Texas attorney general in filing suit against the company. She also said that Yelp did not show “a history of harassment“ from Attorney General Paxton.
