And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. – Colossians 1:9
Knowledge without a sense of how to apply it seems a bit of a waste, doesn’t it? Thomas Savery is recognized as the inventor of the first steam-powered device. Thomas Newcomen took the invention further to build a steam engine that could transmit continuous power. James Watt took it to even greater heights as he increased the power generated by the steam in the engine. All these led to advances in the Industrial Revolution.
The follower of Christ is empowered by the Holy Spirit. While His power is equally strong and accessible to each of God’s children, believers vary in their awareness, connection, and utilization of it. Some may barely realize that He is present and available. Others will rely on His power occasionally or when they think they need some help. Those who call upon the Holy Spirit for help every day in every way benefit the most. They are the ones who take the time to pray and seek Him through studying God’s Word. Dedicated time will reap new revelations of who God is, and it will reveal more of His will for your life.
Matthew Henry wrote that “the knowledge of our duty is the best knowledge. A mere empty notion of the greatest truths is insignificant. Our knowledge of the will of God must be always practical: we must know it, in order to do it.” When you spend time in His Word and in prayer, you can apply what you learn to practical, wise steps in your life.
Let the Spirit of God empower you today and every day. Internalize God’s Word and pray for His wisdom in your life and in the lives of those who govern this nation.

9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
