Ukraine aid is tied to the border security funding.
House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana released a “Dear Colleague” letter to House members on Friday, which said, “If rumors about the contents of the draft proposal are true, it would have been dead on arrival in the House.”
He said that negotiators from the White House and Senate must adopt the “transformative corrections” that were included in the Secure the Border Act proposed in January 2023. He also affirmed moving forward with impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Speaker Johnson told the legislators that, in recent calls and meetings with the president, he had “made clear that we stand with Texas Governor Greg Abbott in his heroic efforts to protect the citizens of his state and all Americans, and I am emphasizing again today that House Republicans will vigorously oppose any policy proposal from the White House or Senate that would further incentivize illegal aliens to break our laws.”
If the Senate-negotiated border bill fails, aid to Ukraine goes with it. There is reportedly no more U.S. funding available to supply weapons and ammunition to Ukraine in its war with Russia.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for Speaker Johnson and representatives of the House as they consider the border and Ukraine aid deal.
- For members of both chambers of Congress as they seek to finalize fiscal year 2024 appropriations.
