Transportation Department Releases Report on 2023 Air Travel

Transportation secretary celebrates 10-year low cancellation rate.

The Department of Transportation celebrated the lowest flight cancellation rate in U.S. aviation in a decade. The Transportation Security Administration reported that 2023 was the busiest air travel year ever. The Transportation Department also expanded protections for airline passengers last year.

Airline cancellations dropped from 8.2 percent in 2022 to just 0.8 percent during the period from December 17, 2023, to January 1, 2024. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg commended the efforts of aviation safety professionals, highlighting their contribution to the less than 1.2 percent cancellation rate.

“Thanks to the tireless work of our nation’s aviation safety professionals, millions of travelers were able to fly safely and without disruption last year,” said Secretary Buttigieg. “We are glad to see this 10-year low rate of cancellations.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Buttigieg and Transportation Department officials as they seek to ensure consumer protections from airlines.
  • For FAA Administrator Whitaker and advisors as they seek to support air traffic control staff.
  • With gratitude to the Lord for the smooth air travel season for so many Americans.
