On Monday, the White House announced the president has issued an executive order to require AI companies to address safety and the privacy of Americans.
“President Biden is rolling out the strongest set of actions any government in the world has ever taken on AI safety, security, and trust,” White House Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed stated. “It’s the next step in an aggressive strategy to do everything on all fronts to harness the benefits of AI and mitigate the risks.”
Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hosted an “AI Insight Forum” showing how the transformative innovation of artificial intelligence is expanding across the country and exploring how Congress might regulate it.
The White House plans to develop a National Security Memorandum that will apply to several White House offices and staff members along with a number of federal agencies. In addition, the State Department is to develop “a robust international framework” on the use and management of AI risks.
