President Joe Biden said that the U.S. would only support a ceasefire once terrorist group Hamas releases the people they have taken hostage. “We should have those hostages released, and then we can talk,” the president said.
Earlier that day, National Security spokesperson John Kirby placed potential decision-making squarely in the hands of the Israeli Defense Forces, stating that it would be “inappropriate” for the U.S. to dictate terms to them or to preview their plans for defense.
“It’s our view that the Israeli Defense Forces… need to decide for themselves how they’re going to conduct operations,” Spokesperson Kirby said.
