Are You Willing?

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth.      Psalm 86:11

A certain television game show posed a series of questions to contestants; by answering correctly, they could win progressively greater amounts of money. If they were unsure of the answer to a question, they were allowed one call to a friend they thought would have the answer. If they answered the question correctly together, the contestant could move on to the next question. It was a “sticky” business. Who do you call? When do you call? If they gave you the wrong answer, you lose.

Christian, you do not have to have that problem. Today’s verse was David’s call to the Lord for answers he needed in a time of trouble. As He was for David, the Lord is available to you whenever you call upon Him… in times of trouble, in times of indecision, in times of sickness, at times when you give Him praise for the wisdom He has given you, the unexpected blessing received, or the truth He reveals as you study His Word.

Prepare your heart to be willing to have the Lord teach you His way. As you learn to yield your will to the Lord as a believer, you come to live under the control of His Spirit. When you are willing, He guides you in your daily walk.

Take Solomon’s final words in Ecclesiastes as your mantra: “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man” (12:13). Charles Spurgeon adds, “To fear God is both the beginning, the growth, and the maturity of wisdom, therefore should we be undividedly given up to it, heart, and soul.” Pray now for this nation that its people would seek the truth only found in the Lord God and His Word.

Today’s Verse: Psalm 86:11

    that I may walk in your truth;

Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
    for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve my life, for I am godly;
    save your servant, who trusts in you—you are my God.
3 Be gracious to me, O Lord,
    for to you do I cry all the day.
4 Gladden the soul of your servant,
    for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
    abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
6 Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
    listen to my plea for grace.
7 In the day of my trouble I call upon you,
    for you answer me.

8 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
    nor are there any works like yours.

11Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may walk in your truth;
    unite my heart to fear your name.
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
