See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit. – Colossians 2:8
On this day in 2001, President George W. Bush announced the establishment of the Office of Homeland Security. Less than a month after the tragedy of September 11, the president sought to take action to prevent such an event from ever happening again. The entity was created to implement “a comprehensive national strategy to secure the United States from terrorist threats or attacks.” Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge was named the first Assistant to the President for Homeland Security. A year later, Congress passed the Homeland Security Act to consolidate security agencies into a single Cabinet-level department, one of the largest restructurings of the federal government since the Cold War. Today, as you pray for U.S. governing officials, consider how the psalmist describes the Lord your security as a refuge, fortress, stronghold, and shield.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to seek God’s wisdom as he heads the Department of Homeland Security.
- That the attorney general and Justice Department officials would prosecute federal crimes impartially.
