May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. – Romans 15:13

Congress approved twelve amendments to the U.S. Constitution on this date in 1789, ten of which would be later ratified by a majority of states becoming the Bill of Rights. After the fledgling nation had spent a few years operating under the first draft of the Constitution, it was clear that more protections of individual rights from the federal government were necessary to help the nation grow. These amendments, particularly for free speech, the right to bear arms, and the right to a fair trial in court, became central to American culture and life. The Constitution now has 27 Amendments as the nation has worked to form a more perfect union. As you consider the changes that have taken place in this country over the nearly two and a half centuries it has existed, pray for governing officials to recognize the godly principles upon which the Constitution and Bill of Rights were founded.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For members of Congress as they consider and vote on legislation that impacts the freedoms of U.S. citizens.
  • For the president and his administration to respect and uphold the ideals of the nation’s founding documents.
