Congress has made moves to block the department from gathering domestic intelligence.
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced the creation of the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group. John Brennan, the former Director of the CIA, and James Clapper, the former Director of National Intelligence, were the top two individuals named to the group.
Secretary Mayorkas said, “The security of the American people depends on our capacity to collect, generate, and disseminate actionable intelligence to our federal, state, local, territorial, tribal, campus, and private sector partners.”
In June, the Senate Intelligence Committee approved legislation that would not let the Department of Homeland Security gather domestic intelligence. The bill, which passed the committee, was scheduled to be added to the National Defense Authorization Act’s Defense Intelligence Act. According to information from the office of Senator Marco Rubio, the act: “Prohibits the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis from collecting information or intelligence on U.S. persons.”
In May, the DHS Office of Terrorism and Violence listed pro-life mothers as potential “radicalization suspects” in a prevention training guide.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For members of Congress as they consider legislation regarding the collection of domestic intelligence information.
- For Secretary Mayorkas as he heads the Department of Homeland Security.
- For discernment for the president and his Cabinet officials as they establish new groups and panels.
