The hope of the righteous brings joy. – Proverbs 10:28
On this date in 1793, President George Washington laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol. The date was met with great fanfare as the president crossed the Potomac River and was greeted by two brass bands, a volunteer artillery company, and a collection of Masons from Maryland and Virginia. The group made the first parade in Washington, D.C., from the construction site of the White House to the construction site of the Capitol. President Washington participated in a Masonic ritual, which included laying an inscribed silver plate beneath the cornerstone. Today, the Architect of the Capitol is responsible for the management of the center of the republic, working to preserve its history. As you pray for governing officials today, ask the Lord to strengthen your foundation of faith and help you recall His history of faithfulness in your life.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For Acting Architect of the Capitol and Chief Engineer Chere Rexroat as she oversees the maintenance and preservation of the Capitol.
- For members of Congress and staff as they work in the historic building and surrounding complex.
