Kamala Harris
Vice President of the United States
Kamala Devi Harris was born in October 1964 in Oakland, California. She earned an undergraduate degree in political science and economics from Howard University and received a Juris Doctor from the University of California Hastings College of Law.
She was deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, serving ten years as a prosecutor. She worked at San Francisco City Hall running the Family and Children’s Services Division. She was elected District Attorney for San Francisco where she served eight years. Harris served eight more years as Attorney General of California. She was elected to the United States Senate and assumed her seat in January 2017.
She entered the 2020 presidential election as a candidate but withdrew in December 2019. In August 2020, presidential candidate Joe Biden announced he had chosen Harris to be his vice president. She was the first African-American, the first Indian-American, and the third woman to be picked as the vice-presidential nominee for a major party ticket. She assumed office in January 2021.
Harris is married to Doug Emhoff, and is stepmother to his two children from a previous marriage. She is a Baptist.
In the News…
Vice President Kamala Harris recently assured the public that she would be prepared to assume the presidency, should such a time arise. She made this assertion as a majority of Americans have expressed concerns that President Biden may be coming to a point where he is not capable of effectively governing the nation.
“Joe Biden is going to be fine, so that is not going to come to fruition,” Vice President Harris said. “But let us also understand that every vice president — every vice president — understands that when they take the oath they must be very clear about the responsibility they may have to take over the job of being president.”
“I’m no different,” the vice president added.
She said, “I see him every day. A substantial amount of time we spend together is in the Oval Office, where I see how his ability to understand issues and weave through complex issues in a way that no one else can to make smart and important decisions on behalf of the American people have played out,” she said. “And so I will say to you that I think the American people ultimately want to know that their president delivers. And Joe Biden delivers.”
