Judge Jon Levy
Maine U.S. District Court
Jon David Levy was born in March 1954 in New York City. He earned an undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and received his Juris Doctor from the West Virginia University College of Law. He served as a clerk at the Southern District of West Virginia U.S. District Court.
He was appointed to serve as a special court monitor of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He later entered private practice in Maine. He served eight years as a judge of the Maine District Court, and two years as the chief judge. He served as an associate justice of the Maine Supreme Court.
Levy was nominated by President Barack Obama to a seat on the bench of the United States District Court for the District of Maine. After a cloture vote, he was confirmed by the Senate. He received his judicial commission in May 2014 and became Chief Judge in 2019.

Judge Jon Levy of the U.S. District Court in Maine has ruled a tenured professor can continue her First Amendment lawsuit against the University of Maine after she was fired for seeking the scientific evidence behind her school’s COVID policies.
District Judge Jon Levy said the plaintiff has sufficiently alleged that “the subject matter of her speech pertained to a matter of great public concern and was outside the scope of her duties as a professor of marketing.”
Judge Levy’s ruling is particularly important at this time as new mask mandates are being implemented at certain universities and concerns rise over the government possibly mandating vaccines or boosters again.
A spokesperson for the University of Maine System said they would continue to defend the school’s actions.
Legal analyst Jonathan Turley said, “The Maine legislature should look into this case and the need to reinforce free speech protections in the system. Faced with a discerning faculty member, the school sought her termination. The alleged intolerance for opposing views is chilling.”
