But test everything; hold fast what is good. – 1 Thessalonians 5:21
Today’s verse is directing you to keep the good stuff and throw out the bad. Everyone has experienced items that sit too long in the refrigerator or pantry. When you go to organize and clear out, you check the expiration dates and freshness to determine what to keep and what to throw away. What is still good, you hold onto and continue to use. Paul’s exhortation is a reminder to test your thoughts as well as what you see and hear. If it aligns with the truth of God’s word and His character, meditate on it, keep it, use it, and share it. If it is not of God, then let go of it. This could even mean changes in lifestyle or friendships. As a follower of Christ, you are also directed by Paul to think and meditate on that which is good and wholesome (Philippians 4:8). Ask the Lord to fill you with His love to the point that you brightly shine His goodness so everyone around you can see it and glorify Him.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For members of Congress as they consider and vote on bills and their amendments to keep what is good and let go of what is not.
- For senators to discern the character of nominees as they hold confirmation hearings and vote according to what is beneficial.
