August 8th – Tuesday

Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment. – John 7:14

On this day in 2009, Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, becoming the first Hispanic judge and third woman to serve on the high court. Born to Puerto Rican parents in the Bronx, New York, Justice Sotomayor received her law degree from Yale in 1979. She served in private practice before being appointed to the U.S. District Court in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush. She was the first Supreme Court justice nominated by President Barack Obama and sided with the majority decision that upheld the Affordable Care Act in 2012. Since the careers of judges rely on sound judgment, pray today’s verse over members of the federal judiciary as they issue rulings. Ask the Lord to give you discernment to look beyond appearances as you go about your daily life.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For justices of the Supreme Court and federal judges as they determine the constitutionality of legislation and regulations.
  • For discernment for the president and his advisors as nominees are chosen for the federal judiciary.
