But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. – Hebrews 5:14
Much time and effort goes into developing the skills and techniques necessary to play baseball or football, violin, or piano. Any athlete or musician, whether novice or master, must practice to be successful. It should be no surprise that, in the realm of faith, the more mature believer has spent time acquiring a good foundation from God’s handbook.
A child of God may initially be satisfied with the rudiments of his knowledge of God, but one who desires more will have an increasingly joyful, blessed, and satisfying life. There is spiritual food in Scripture for the young in salvation, as well as those who have known the Lord as Savior for years. While the Bible can provide a course of study in history, theology, and morals, it is also used as a profound source of information, exhortation, and reproof regarding righteousness, God, and eternity. The depths of its message have not yet been fully probed.
The truth of God’s Word is far-reaching and provides a template for your examination of good and evil. The better you know His Word, the deeper your perception becomes in distinguishing right from wrong, truth from falsehood. J. Barmby wrote in his commentary, “Spiritual discernment, an apprehension of God’s deep things, is the result of use. Inability to understand is the judgment on inattention. Scripture is a sealed book to the heart that neglects it.”
Though life is filled with possible pursuits and distractions, commit yourself to discovering the treasures in God’s book. He wants to bless you and others with spiritual riches. Be devoted to knowing Him.

7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
