So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours… and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. – 1 Corinthians 3:21, 23
The U.S. launched its invasion of Puerto Rico 125 years ago today, during the Spanish-American War. The attack met with little resistance, just seven people died, and it took less than a month to complete. Following the signing of the Treaty of Paris at the end of the war, the cession of Puerto Rico to the U.S. became official. Efforts were made, in the decades that followed, to make the island part of the country, including granting full U.S. citizenship to Puerto Ricans, and attempting to make English its official language. Today, Puerto Rico is still a U.S. territory. In November of 2020, 53 percent of Puerto Ricans voted in favor of a referendum to pursue U.S. statehood. Pray for the officials in the U.S. government and Puerto Rico as discussions continue over the future of Puerto Rico and its relationship with the U.S.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For federal legislators as they deliberate the addition of Puerto Rico as a state in the union.
- For the leaders of the Caribbean island as they govern the territory under U.S. jurisdiction.
