Oh grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! – Psalm 108:12
Heather Schopf’s song called The Snare of Prosperity conveys life for most people in the United States: “I dwell in a land of rich prosperity/ I live in a home of warmth and beauty/ I hope in a future full of possibility/ My cup, Lord, is filled and overflows!/ Yet, I know, Lord, I know with surety/ these comforts and things can become a snare to me/ I know, Lord, that in peace and security/ temptation awaits me there to forget You/ to forget the One from Whom all blessings flow.”
When Israel had victories and periods of peace, they forgot the God of their salvation. They would rely on their own desires and plans. In distress, they would acknowledge God as their only hope and refuge, and draw close to Him again. He was merciful and faithful (Psalm 86:15).
Unlike Israel, which had to conquer a land and its people before they could think of beginning to settle down, many people in this country have no idea what it means to fight for liberty. Living in opulence, they look down upon these freedoms and the people who fought for them.
Only “with God we shall do valiantly” (v.13). Ms. Schopf’s message concludes to “cautiously walk in this land of prosperity,” guarding heart and mind attentively so you can live for God. “Let me thank you, Lord, for ev’ry blessing/ let me loosely hold to ev’ry possession/ Let me purpose in my soul/that my one and only passion is to know You… and to love You!” Be conscious that prosperity may be a “foe.” Be devoted to God. Pray for Christ’s followers in government to be so dedicated to Him that it shines as an example to others.

My heart is steadfast, O God!
I will sing and make melody with all my being!
2 Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
3 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
4 For your steadfast love is great above the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let your glory be over all the earth!
6 That your beloved ones may be delivered,
give salvation by your right hand and answer me!
Oh grant us help against the foe,
for vain is the salvation of man!
13 With God we shall do valiantly;
it is he who will tread down our foes.
