The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. – James 5:16
The United States gained its Sunshine State on this date in 1821, when Spain ceded the territory in the Adams-Onís Treaty. John Quincy Adams, who was the Secretary of State under President Monroe, helped craft the treaty with Luis de Onís y González-Vara, the diplomatic envoy of King Ferdinand VII of Spain. The U.S. did not pay Spain for the territory but rather agreed to pay the legal claims of American citizens against Spain and to give up its claims on parts of Texas. Florida has become the third most populous state in the nation and continues to grow. As you consider the growth of the United States today, reflect upon the spectacular trade Jesus made for your redemption. His sacrifice not only saved you from the penalty of sin but ensured, when you accept His Lordship of your life, that you will spend eternity with Him in heaven.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For Secretary of State Antony Blinken as he negotiates for American citizens being imprisoned in foreign countries.
- For the president and his advisors to seek God’s guidance as they consider and craft agreements with other nations.
