Our sufficiency is from God. – 2 Corinthians 3:5
On this day in 1776, the Second Continental Congress approved the United States’ resolution of independence. Since the second Congress first convened in 1775, they had been deliberating how best to respond to Britain’s continued over-taxation. Richard Henry Lee submitted a formal resolution to declare the colonies independent from the British Empire on June 7. Congress drafted the Articles of Confederation, a Model Treaty, and the Declaration of Independence so that they had formal documents to support the resolution. They approved the resolution on July 2, and approved the final draft of the Declaration of Independence two days later on July 4. As the nation continues to debate the importance of freedom balanced against the need for national security, give God praise and glory for the ways He has liberated you from sin and darkness.
As the Lord leads, pray with us…
- For members of the Legislative Branch as they propose reforms for government agencies.
- For justices and judges in the federal judiciary as they weigh the protections of the Bill of Rights against new laws and regulations.
