FDA already authorized products as safe to consume.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has given the approval for a meat product grown directly from animal cells. A USDA spokesperson said the lab-grown chicken products were approved, passing food and safety systems at the facilities where they were made.
The Food and Drug Administration, which shares regulation of cultivated meat with the USDA, has already given its authorization of the products as safe for consumption. The companies that produce the cultivated meat are looking to supply the product to restaurants before attempting to have it stocked in grocery stores.
