In the News…
Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the nation’s “drug czar,” said recently that without policy action, America could lose 165,000 lives a year due to the opioid crisis by the year 2025.
He said 46 million Americans suffer from addiction and 109,000 died from an overdose last year. According to provisional data from the CDC, he said that would be an increase of around 55,000 more deaths per year over 2022.
“There is almost no other area today, where it affects our public health, national security, and economic prosperity, than the opioid crisis,” he said.
He claimed that the policies of President Biden could cut overdose deaths by half if they are implemented. Those call for funding treatment for incarcerated individuals and expanding telehealth treatment.
