Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. – Romans 12:2

Nurse, teacher, and author Dorothea Dix was appointed Superintendent of Female Nurses by Union Surgeon General William Hammond on this day in 1861. She had been a nurse in the U.S. Sanitary Commission during the Crimean War and developed standards for nursing candidates, including age requirements and dress codes. Though many surgeons and doctors were not interested in having female nurses present in their hospitals, the War Department introduced an order in 1863 granting both Surgeon General Joseph Barnes and Superintendent Dix (by then Superintendent of Army Nurses) the power to appoint female nurses. She then established the Federal Army Nursing Program. When Jesus walked the earth, He had compassion for those who suffered. He healed men and women, who often became His followers. As you pray for this nation today, ask the Lord to show you how you can share His comfort with others.

As the Lord leads, pray with us…

  • For Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to be led by God in fulfilling his role in the government.
  • For wisdom for Secretary Christine Wormuth as she heads the U.S. Army.
