The allegations stem from federal documents probe.
Former President Donald J. Trump has been told to appear next Tuesday in Miami, Florida for arraignment on federal criminal charges. A grand jury returned an indictment on seven charges alleging mishandling of sensitive government documents after he left the White House. The indictment involves espionage, “conspiracy to obstruct and willful retention of documents” and making false statements.
President Trump called the indictment “election interference at the highest level.” He stated, “I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States“ who is “currently leading… in polls of the 2024 presidential election.“ He added that he is innocent of the charges.
Harvard law professor emeritus, Alan Dershowitz voiced concerns over the United States becoming like nations “where a suspicion is equivalent to conviction of guilt on one side of the political spectrum, rather than the other. But the key is, you have to have one system and one standard of law enforcement.”
He continued, “If there is a certain level of evidence of serious crime against anybody on either side — whether it’s the sitting president, the son of the sitting president, the former president, the same rule has to be applicable to all of them. The Justice Department cannot be allowed to use its enormous power of the criminal justice system to influence political elections.”
