Pressure on self-governed island nation increases with Chinese military activity.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry announced that it had identified three Chinese warships and an aircraft carrier passing through the Taiwan Strait recently. This action by Beijing, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, places pressure on the self-governed island. The ministry stated that it will continue to closely monitor the ships’ movements and respond accordingly.
In August 2022, China carried out its military exercises near Taiwan, following then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei. Now, China has been regularly sending ships and warplanes near the island to assert its claim over Taiwan—indicating a possible willingness to use force if necessary. Taiwan has responded by having its armed forces deploy aircraft, navy vessels, and land-based missile systems.
