Free to be at Peace

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.   Galatians 5:1

Many students are nearing or have already come to the end of their school year. For some, it can be a time of chaos as they try to finish projects or study for finals, particularly when they haven’t prepared enough throughout the term. Others are at peace because there are no more projects to finish, no more exams to take – they are not burdened with a load at the end. What a feeling of freedom and relief!

For those whose religion would have them do certain things in order to make their way to heaven – in the belief that human effort plays a big part in salvation – it seems that peace would never be within grasp. They will always wonder if they have done enough. Jesus taught a different way. God’s grace and love for all people provides that way. Skeptics say, “There has to be more,” but there is nothing more to do. The one who believes in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ on the cross has been set free… free from guilt and free from being enslaved to sin. You are free to be at peace with God because He took care of everything.

Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone. No one can believe for you, but believing is all you need to do.

Paul’s command is to then stand firm in your faith, not letting the world pull you back into its grip of sin and doubt. The fruit of the Spirit will blossom in you when you rely fully on God. Pray for those in this nation who are struggling in their self-reliance, that they come to solely rely on Christ.

Today’s Verse: Galatians 5:1

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
    and whose sins are covered;
8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

13 For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.

16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
