In the News…
Lina Khan, chair of the Federal Trade Commission, wrote that it is critical for her agency to monitor the risks of the rise of artificial intelligence.
“As companies race to deploy and monetize A.I., the Federal Trade Commission is taking a close look at how we can best achieve our dual mandate to promote fair competition and to protect Americans from unfair or deceptive practices,” Chairwoman Khan wrote.
“Although these tools are novel, they are not exempt from existing rules, and the F.T.C. will vigorously enforce the laws we are charged with administering, even in this new market,” she added.
She said existing laws on fairness and justice will be upheld as AI becomes more widely used in areas like employment, housing, and healthcare. She also stated that guardrails need to be legislated, calling this time a “key decision point,” particularly in the innovation competition with China.
