In the News…
The School Shooting Safety and Preparedness Act was introduced in the Senate by Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado. The legislation would help legislators “gain a complete and accurate picture of gun violence in and around school campuses,” which would aid them in policy development and action steps.
Senator Bennet said that gun violence has become a leading cause of death for children and that they should not be afraid that they will be killed at their schools. He said, “By improving data collection and sharing, the School Shooting Safety and Preparedness Act is a step toward preventing these tragedies and keeping our kids safe at school.”
Among other things, the law would establish a definition for “school shooting,” which does not presently exist in federal law. With a standardized definition, legislators would have a consistent means to measure such incidents and the effect of strategies and policies implemented in response.
